The 12-Point Manifesto of the AFP

The guiding principles behind South Africa’s fleet profession and the people who lead it.

The 12 principles of the AFP Manifesto are not aspirations but commitments. Each one is grounded
in the realities fleet professionals face daily and driven by developing the future of the profession.

01 — Professional development

The industry moves fast. Standing still is falling behind.

Fleet professionals navigate a dynamic market often without the structured development to match. The AFP provides continuous learning opportunities designed specifically for the demands of modern fleets, so that those who leading them are always ahead of what the industry demands next.

02 — Industry standards and best practice

Without standards, excellence has no measure.
The AFP establishes and promotes industry standards that bring rigour and credibility to every aspect of fleet management, creating a common language of excellence that raises the bar for the entire sector.

03 — Networking and knowledge sharing

The best solutions are already out there – in someone else's fleet.

Fleet managers often operate in isolation, solving problems others have already solved. The AFP breaks that isolation by connecting professionals across sectors and company sizes, creating a community where no fleet manager must navigate the industry alone.

04 — Advocacy and representation

Fleet professionals shape the economy; they should shape the conversation too.

The decisions made in fleet departments affect multiple spheres, yet the profession rarely has a seat at the table where policy and industry direction are set. The AFP is a unified and credible voice that ensures fleet professionals are represented.

05 — Career advancement

A profession without a recognised career path attracts no one and retains few.

Too many fleet professionals find themselves in the role without a clear framework for growth. The AFP builds that structure, recognising and rewarding excellence. It establishes fleet management as a career of deliberate choice and meaningful advancement.

06 — Addressing local challenges

South Africa defines itself as a unique country. It demands its own answers as well.

South African realities include both challenges like loadshedding, and opportunities presented by cross-border logistics. International frameworks do not consider this. The AFP incorporates a strong local context into its membership benefits. Solutions that work here, must be built here.

07 — Environmental sustainability

The profession that leads the transition to cleaner fleets will define the industry.
Environmental sustainability is no longer a future consideration but a current business imperative. Fleet professionals are driving meaningful environmental progress in their organisations. The AFP equips members with the knowledge and tools to lead that transition with confidence.

08 — Bridging the skills gap

Underdeveloped talent is the industry's most expensive hidden cost.
There is a significant gap between the skills fleet management demands and those entering the industry. The AFP’s targeted training, structured development pathways, and formal academic progression, builds a pipeline of professionals that the industry can rely on for the long term.

09 — Enhanced business value

Fleets are one of the largest organisational costs. It deserves management of equal calibre.

When fleet management is undervalued, it is under-resourced and overlooked in strategic decisions. The AFP helps fleet professionals demonstrate their measurable contribution to the business, making a strong case for investment in both the function and the people who lead it.

10 — Fostering innovation

The fleet industry is being reinvented. AFP members will be the ones doing it.
Technology is reshaping fleet management faster than most organisations can track. The AFP connects members to the latest developments and ensures innovation is not just adopted but driven by professionals who understand the operational reality best.

11 — Supporting economic growth

When fleets run better, South Africa moves better.
The fleet sector is a critical enabler of commerce, infrastructure, and employment. When fleet management improves, the economic effect extends far beyond any individual organisation. The AFP invests in the profession and the economy it serves.

12 — A professional support system

In a demanding industry, who you can call matters.
Fleet management is high-stakes, often high-pressure, and rarely recognised for its complexity. The AFP provides more than knowledge and standards. It creates a community that understands the profession from the inside, so that no AFP member carries the weight of the industry alone.
These twelve principles are the foundation on which the profession is being built and rebuilt by the AFP.
